The Basilica Cistern is the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns that lie beneath the city of Istanbul. It was built in the 6th century during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. The cistern is capable of holding 80,000 cubic meters of water and is supported by 336 marble columns. Visitors can walk along a raised platform and view the columns and the fish swimming in the water.
